Leo’s Korean Birthday Dohl held in Culver City was definitely one for the books. This event held a special place in everyone’s hearts because it also acted as a pseudo-wedding for Leo’s parents. Leo’s parents got married during the pandemic and weren’t able to have their own wedding before having Leo. Leo’s birthday became a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only Leo, but also to express gratitude to friends & family members for all the support their marriage had received despite not being able to hold a ceremony.
What is a DOHL?
Old Korean tradition celebrates the birthday of a one year old baby. The big milestone is celebrated with a huge party called the doljanchi. In the past, many children died before their first birthday, so it was an important event to the parents.
THE BABY:
Leo
LOCATION:
SmogShoppe, Culver City
From the backdrop to the floral installations to the desserts, a color palette of green and touches of gold was carried throughout.
We can't get enough of the personal details! The design for Leo’s Dohl started with his love of animals! Christine Chang drew and cut out all of the animal figures on the backdrop, party favor masks, seat tags. It really felt like a Sunday brunch at the jungle thanks to her tireless, artistic fingers.
Leo’s mom also got custom-made soaps of Leo’s face to give out. Too cute to use. Almost.
Leo picked a microphone during the Dohljabi—a Korean custom where the child selects an object that will represent the child's future. We can’t wait to see the amazing person Leo becomes whether or not the prediction comes true!
